Through organizing cleanups, participating on councils and eventually starting his own non-profit organization, Aryan Gautam said he has spent more than 11,000 hours, since the age of 12, working to protect the environment.

The organization aims to use technological innovation to make various sectors environmentally sustainable while also advocating for youth involvement in environmental decisions.

“We want to save the planet. We also want to open doors for youth and other communities that are hoping to get into the sector.”

The life of a Planet Protector

Aryan is an active member of a variety of groups and councils looking to save the planet.

He is also a co-operating activist for two Indigenous organizations: Eagle Spirits of the Great Waters and Eco-Spirits.

Aryan and his organization are overseeing several initiatives that look to battle environmental issues in different ways.

The butternut tree is one of two walnut trees native to Canada. They also hold significance to some Indigenous communities as they can be used for food, medicine and cultural practices.

What's next for Aryan?

Aryan said he wouldn’t be able to dedicate so much time to volunteering if it wasn’t for the support of his family, teachers and friends.

With one more year of high school left, Aryan said he is thinking ahead to the future.
